HOLLYWOOD, CA — Irish actor Barry Keoghan has officially signed on to portray daytime talk show legend Ellen DeGeneres in an upcoming biopic titled “Degenerate: The Life of a Legend.”
The announcement came during a surprise panel at the Cannes Film Festival, where producers described the film as “a bold, genre-defying character study that explores identity, fame, and how many times someone can say ‘be kind’ before throwing a crew member’s headset at the wall.”
Keoghan, known for his unsettling and transformative roles in films like The Banshees of Inisherin and Saltburn, reportedly won the role after sending in an audition tape featuring a dead-eyed monologue about gift card giveaways and dancing against someone’s will. “There’s something about Barry’s energy — unsettling, unpredictable, and deeply watchable — that just is Ellen,” said director Marlene Dunst, who previously helmed the unauthorized Dr. Phil miniseries Behind the Mustache.
DeGeneres says she wasn’t initially sold on the idea of Keoghan playing her in a role meant to encapsulate her biggest triumphs and largest obstacles of her life but after seeing him play Joker in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, she knew Keoghan was the right man for the part.
While some critics are praising the unconventional choice, calling it “a powerful commentary on fluidity in modern performance,” others are less convinced. One DeGeneres fan account on Twitter posted, “I love Barry, but unless he’s legally blonde and emotionally dead inside, I don’t see the vision.”
The film will reportedly cover Ellen’s early stand-up days, her explosive rise in television, her coming out on national TV, and the behind-the-scenes drama of her show’s final seasons. Keoghan will wear extensive prosthetics and undergo what insiders call “aggressive dance bootcamp” to prepare for the role. When asked if he’s nervous about the backlash, the actor replied, “I’ve played psychopaths before — this should be manageable.”
The biopic is set for release in Spring 2026, strategically timed for awards season and International Day of Awkward Workplace Apologies.
